How to prepare for competitive programming?

Question

I am currently studying 9th class.I'm going to appear in ICO (Indian Computing Olympiad)for participating in IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics).I know basic programming in c++ and a bit STL ,I want to get atleast a medal in IOI.Please give me some resources to learn competitive programming and tips so that I can fulfil my dream.

[+] Have a high-quality perceptive on Data structure and algorithms.
[+] Learn single programming Language very well, try to recognize it flaw/weakness and power/strength.
[+] Practice as much as you can.

Divide and rule... here we call it divide and conquer. That's the best strategy I know in handling challenging tasks. If you divide your problems to mini problems to the level you are conversant with, solving them becomes easier.

While the google competitions may sound scary, you can check their previous years competitions and practice with the challenges. There's also a competition that runs all year long, called Kickstart, which is also a good way to practice.
