What is an API. What's is use?

I've seen this word a lot of times and I think it ia a lot of use. Could anyone please tell me the potential of API

You may think about a nice web service, e. g. Youtube. It is a database which you can "ask" by hand, using buttons and search boxes of its webpage. It would be useful to ask these questions in batch or an automatized manner, wouldn't be? : ) Well API is for that. It is an interface for programs to send queries for them without "clicking the buttons". So by using them you can connect some services to build some smart pipelines.
