well I searched for same question on internet and answer was something like -
Facebook earlier got most of its earnings from advertising.but business model of WhatsApp is completely different . the main reason Mark purchased WhatsApp was to know about users chatting habit so that it could be sold to big companies who needed it so they could understand user and target the products accordingly.If you remember whenever you install they ask for certain permission which actually helps them know about your habit as a customer .
