Are there any sources to plainly describe (in lay terms, examples of apps, comparisons, etc.) what each language can do?

Lay description of languages, their differences in implementation. E.g. javascript to communicate with the user. Or explanations about the server-side/client-side apps. I know I can Google each but I ask for a valuable shortcut.
