PHP or ASP.NET

which one is better for back-end web development, and why?

I don't believe there is a better or worse between the 2. In my opinion the big drivers will be where you work, where you live in the world, the computer your server is on, what your comfortable coding in and cost. Your work place dictates what they use most of the time but at home that's up to you. Some parts of the world prefer .NET over other parts of the world. .NET runs better on Windows machines while PHP is slightly better on linux machines. PHP follows in "C" style of code for the most part while ASP.NET is more like "basic". While very similar they have some major differences that do make them somewhat alien to each other. PHP is open source and generally free. ASP a bit less so.
