Linux is an user-friendly, open and free (as in freedom) operating system. It is maybe the most used by programmers and computer scientists and is known to be one of the most powerful and stable OS in the world ( Linux is on every computer of the Top 500 , and a big part of the internet servers run Linux - Google's, for example-). I'd also say that I learned incredibly more with Linux than I would has learned with other OS, such as Mac OS X or Windows.
