It really depends on the person, but surely it would take a lot of time and knowledge to be an expert. Expert means that you understand deeply all the part of your programming language which you are expert in, and know most of it's frameworks and how they work. As for the time, if you use most of your day time to learn, then it should only take few months.

Sigh... Programming takes time and if your into speed and learning it all in a matter or weeks or months ??? Then you are in the wrong line of work this discipline will drive you nuts if you dont have any patience. So its best to take your time find your niche and study it and create. Good luck.

So you can be a real expert in 6 or 7 years if you put in 30 hours a week for 50 weeks in a year.

Becoming a genius should not be your goal. First off people typically will not be able to remember things that well if your not constantly using them. Knowing the basics of the languages you will use should be your actual goal. It is unrealistic to try and know all but I would recommend keeping a journal and writing notes on what you learn so that you both understand what is being learned better and so you have written help if you ever need it. Your first step is to learn basic web development in this order: HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, JavaScript. At least the basics of these will do. Then find a programming language that is somewhat low level or one you want to specialize in. Knowing several languages is fine but being able to specialize in one will help out both your memory and your coding path. To learn everything to at least basics is could take anywhere from 3 months to 3 years if depends on the person.

You'll be an expert if you understand the logic of those programs that you are writing and if you have the following skill sets on you: 1. Problem solver 2. Innovator 3. Creator
