Is it necessary to use java for Android app making?

I heard at many places that you have to learn Java to make Android app but I use ruby language. can I use ruby to make Android app or I need to learn Java and why?

you can use Ruby, Python, C++, and more but using Java is best for productivity and performance.

You also got frameworks that dont use java lile phonegap or xamarin if you need a very simple app, you could use mit app inventor 2

You can use anything that runs on the JVM for Android.
