The earliest machines required humans to tune the gears physically to carry out a different computation (i.e. A different program). Later on, electric signals were developed and switches were used on Vacuum Tubes (on/off, a.k.a. binary system. Still, the entire task of programming was immensely tedious). From here, the first programming language appeared where programmers are required to change statements by 0s and 1s, by hand. Later onwards, the first compiler was created to translate statements to binary numbers.
