SQL is a language to execute queries in a database, now SQL Injection is a technique that is how you implement it, it can be Hacking or Cracking, keep in mind they are very different terms, this technique allows you to extract information from a database, so to be able to do this you have to understand the SQL statements in addition to understand the vulnerabilities present in the web sites
