Do I have to know a lot about Java to make Android Apps?

I want to make Android games (old school 2D just to clarify). Well I was told by one person that "the main thing I needed to learn for apps was Java cause they are written in Java" however I've heard by a few people here that I only need basic knowledge of Java and some XML to make App Games... so who is right? Which statement is true?
