HTTP
hypertext transfer protocol
HTTPS (HTTP over SSL)
hypertext transfer protocol secure
HTTPS creates a secure channel over an insecure network. This ensures reasonable protection from
eavesdroppers and man-in-the-middle attacks , provided that adequate cipher suites are used and that the server certificate is verified and trusted.

HTTPS is a secure protocol. it run on port 443 while HTTP run normally on port 80. If you want to use HTTPS on your site, you need to have a valid certificate for your domain name.
The main benefit from HTTPS is the connection between user and web server will be encrypted.
