Easy wikipedia would say what versions of HTML there were. But main difference between HTML and HTML5 is semantics. HTML5 brought a lot of stuff that means exactly what it means in english. Tag word "aside" means exactly that. Something inside "aside" tag,will be aside,meaning left or right on the screen. Same with footer,header, article and so on. Those tag words, mean exactly that. This is called semantics. Focus on html5, you will need html4 and lower only if you need to upgrade old html code to html5. Otherwise, use html5.
