What are some things signified by "line-through" text?

To me, this has always meant the content is old or incorrect, and to disregard. I've seen it used, in many instances, however, where this interpretation is clearly problematic.

What are some other reasons for choosing to use this style?

a lot of people use it when they are making a sarcastic comment like say making a politically correct statement but using a strike through to state what they're really thinking to say. it's also used in programming comments to signify deprecated methods, etc.
