Two words, "backward compatibility". Browsers are designed to be more forgiving about syntax problems, and to maintain support of something, long enough after its deprecation, just to give people time to adapt to the new tech. P.S. Self marked answer doesn't necessarily bring XP reward.

It works, but it is deprecated (its use is discouraged) by the W3C. Quoted from Wikipedia "The tag was first introduced in early versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and was compared to Netscape's blink element, as a proprietary non-standard extension to the HTML standard with usability problems. The W3C advises against its use in HTML documents." One thing I need to say - even if it does work or even if it was not deprecated, please do not use it. It looks very bad and annoying. I mean, why would you even want *moving text*?!
