its better to write it as code in css "selector" { font-style: italic }

It's better to keep all styling to CSS and leave HTML for just the structure of your webpage. That way your HTML code is simple and it's less confusing where everything is.

The italic tag will show the same thing, but style with CSS is better, more control, more speed!

<i></i> Is an html tag that you can use separately from CSS, so it isn't in fact a shortening of "italic" in the CSS code.
