With the codes you have the flexibility of changing the color. You can get millions of color combinations using the color codes, as opposed to just a few, when using names.

You can use both but there's very very limited number of colors which have own names like: red, green, blue, tomato, olive.. 140 or something like that. On the other hand, we have like 16 million combinations of color mixes and shades.. That's why you need hex-codes if you want to use other colors than those with names.
