Bitwise Exclusive Or has a number of uses. It would be easier to answer if you could share some code where you have seen it used. I use it mostly as a bit toggling function - to flip bits to their opposite value.
The operation can be considered as a != test. If the two bits being compared are found to be not equal to each other, then the resulting bit value is 1 (true). If the bits have the same value then the resulting bit value is 0 (false).
