What do I need to learn and how to be able to problem solving

I understand that I will need math but which branch ?

And some algorithms [sorting, insertion, deletion and so on] learning are needed but shouldn't I use my own algorithms ?

Also, from what I found that I need to understand data structure any thing else is required as a background ?
