I've been an IT Recruiter for over 10 years. The answer is that for developers, a degree isn't always necessary. There are a lot of Dev positions which require no degree. However there are some things to consider. As follows: 1. There are many company's which do require a degree to be employed by them as a Dev. 2. Your career WILL be affected (probably negatively) if you don't get a degree because a lot of upward opportunity (and more money) require a degree. A Dev manager position is probably going to require a degree. Same goes for team leads. 3. You will bring more to the table if you come in with a degree which means that if you and another Dev are interviewing for the same position. If your coding skills are close to equal then the one with the degree is likely to get the job. Of course there are other factors too. Those are just a few. Bottom line is that yes you can get Dev jobs with no degree, but it's not the ideal way to start a career.
