Hi Said ☺ an application is basically a type of software designed to be used by the user and perform a specific or limited tasks/activities. This is how I mostly differentiate them, if they were developed for the end-user and require user interaction then they are apps. Also apps can't run on themselves, they depend on system software to execute, whereas software may or may not be executable. Therefore, we could say that every app is a software but not the other way around.
Example of Software: Operating systems.
Example of Application: Photoshop.

The acronym APP has been introduced by Apple when they introduced the first Apple Smartphone the Iphone. They needed a name for a place where you could buy or download small programs to store it on your Iphone. Calling it simply the software store or Program Store didn't sound that good like the "APP STORE" you even hear the close sound connotation like the Apple Store.
But in construction any App is the same as any software program you can get and use on you computer or laptop, with the difference that they run on a different OS. Even Microsoft developed a short version of Windows suitable for their PDA and first PDA phones from Hewlett-Packard or better known as HP. Those early and actually FIRST Smartphones used the Windows Mobile OS. They had all the functionality of any today's Smatphones. I owned one of those in 1998 so longtime before the Apple Iphone came out.
