HTML gives structure to the web page, while CSS gives design to it...

As Gami mentioned, HTML is the structure of the document and CSS helps you style this structure (the design and looks of it) Another way of seeing it is: HTML is the bones and CSS the skin

Another analogy: think of it like building a house. The HTML takes care of the structure...the layout of the walls , the floor etc. Then you use CSS to decorate your house - paint the walls, put down carpet choose some lampshades... Finally JS is what actually makes your house work - your electricity, plumbing and heating.
