Why do we try to tag a person with "@" symbol, even though we all know this cant happen?

As far as I'm concerned, the current non-existing @mention system is working pretty well.

it is short for at. It directs the comment to a person. You are correct though. It does nothing apart from letting us type less

because it's a symbol.. everyone​ knows what the meaning of that symbol.. every time I saw the symbol, I know that his/her comment is pointing someone
