in general I'd say they're equal (using C++, Java, web languages, Python). depending on the tools used.

It's free and open source, flexible and has a powerful command line.

There are many options to choose, try a few in a virtual machine to see which one fits better for you.
Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Manjaro, Debian, KDE Neon, Fedora, openSuse...

Whichever you feel to be more proficient with. Programming environments are mostly interoperational (obvious OS-specific features aside :)

of course there are differences. but they're unimportant when you want to program platform independent software. if you want to create applications for a specific os, you'd use it.

Here can be written a huge list of features where Linux shines but I just want to say this:

LINUX is a open source so you get to know more about on going back end processes which remains unknown in windows. with LINUX you would be able to understand OS(operating system) related things more clearly. There are other benefits for windows like GUI availability for everything, but as a curious developer, linux would be more helpful
