Hacking was never meant to be known for doing bad things but because of media and criminals, hacking is now seen as bad. Good Hacking is now known as Ethical Hacking.
Hacking just plain and simply means to gain unauthorised access. It's the intent behind the hacker that determines whether he'll be labelled as a Hacker or an Ethical Hacker.

Neither. Hacking doesn't have a moral compass, we humans do. We've collectively come to the conclusion that privacy is a basic human right and all actions that fringe upon it are looked down upon. However. what is "unauthorized access" is still often largely up to inter Leaving your Facebook open so your friend can access it, is a very different kind of breach of trust than a multinational illegally collecting and selling their customers information.
I'm not trying to make a moral relativist argument. I think the tactics employed, the cautions taken and the damage caused while they're trying to find vulnerabilities make a real difference. I don't practice hacking but I'm friends with some White Hats and I support their cause, while I oppose some of the very questionable hacking going on in the Deep Web right now. The ends don't justify the means.

to answer your question " is hacking a good thing or bad thing" hacking - ethical hacking is a good thing it is used to test vulnerability of programs and devices like ( mp3 players, ipods , cars, even the more modern fridges, sim cards that you put in your phones) there are multiple devices and multiple use of hacking and learning about vulnerability of our day to day devices. now hacking in a general sense if your intended purpose is to cause a crime then of course its bad. but overall hacking is a good thing it helps protects people by finding those vulnerabilities so we can correct and fix them or least make it harder to have someone cause an attack against someone.

Hacking is like a frying pan. You can either improve and inspire by creating, or you could wreak havoc and break what others built. Those that hack to break are often referred to by ethical or white hat hackers as crackers for interest sake.

There are three types of Hackers: White, Gray, and Black Hats.
White & Gray: Do hacking on an ethical scale (test hacking a software, website, etc and report the loopholes in security to the client)
Black: Do online scamming, hacking, identity theft, DDoS, and other heinous acts that goes against the cyberlaw.

Hacking is actually not for bad or illegal use but it is to protect ouresleves from being accesed our account by illegal means. It is basically to secure ourself from being hacked by someone else.It was never made for illegal use.
