A markup language uses 'Tags' to create a structure for positioning components. Examples of such languages include HTML and XML. The most know of these is HTML. Which uses tags such as "<p>" to mark the beginning of paragraphs and " </p>" to mark the end of the paragraph.

@cheeze I never mentioned markdown. Markdown is also often converted to HTML which does use tags

@cheese Although I understand your reasoning even Google dictionary when asked to define a markup language states "The code used to specify the formatting are called tags". Thus according to this definition markup languages must contain tags.
