Notepad++ sends the names of all of your apps to India for data mining. Years ago I used notepad++ on a win 7 while going back to college. I'm sad to hear about the data mining with notepad++ as I liked it as a text editor. Data mining has become a horrible scourge prevelant to many apps today.

Yeah I also heard that Norton is an expensive resource hog infamous for false positives, which slows down your comp and isn't any better than other anti-virus freeware you can get in the market.

That's shocking, btw did you get the notepad++ installer directly from their official website (https://notepad-plus-plus.org/) if you got it from other download source there's a possibility that the installer file has been compromised. I suggest uninstall current version and install latest version from their official website.

Notepad++ is a free and open source editor. If what norton claims is true, there must be traces in the source code that is available for checking.

I had norton (full trial for a while on a new PC) and I experienced viruses that I wasn't aware of.
Tell me that you can check Any Norton product source code....

For me the winner is the most transparent software.
Btw check the notepad++ merchandise and tell me that the French dev is not a cool guy.

@seamiki I agree with you,

@Wiley I was surprised you said you install notepad++ from Play Store, because the official website https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ seems to only provide a Windows version.

So I checked Play Store and found some apps published by the name notepad++, but I doubt if they are in any way related to the notepad++. Can you tell me which notepad++ you installed (the developer name) from Play Store?.

I'm on Android smartphone, and using Malwarebytes only for checking apps that I download. Have you cross checked with other AVs? looking forward to your next post.

@Wiley, as written in your 1st post, you said you used Notepad++ on Win7 years ago I was mislead that you're still running Notepad++ on Windows, that's why I recommend you to download and install the latest version from their official website.

The Android app from Control Assistance is a totally different app, it has nothing to do and far beyond comparison with the real Notepad++. The developers of Notepad++ has been very kind not to sue Google (for publishing, without checking) or those developers using Notepad++ for their app title to fool and lure people.

Finally, I think you might consider @seamiki's post to edit your original post, we don't want to trigger more people respond to this, as it is now clear that things aren't as they seem on the original post.

After that you can post new question such as text editor for Android, or you can use the Search bar on the Q&A page querying "text editor for Android" (without quotes) because I've seen some posts regarding that previously.

android app are often only a cheap way to get some passive income and are therefore cheaply misleading to get one more download.
The developers of any of the apps on the play store is not recognizable as the dev of the original notepad++ text editor for windows.
If they are using the notepad++ logo for a mere post-it/reminder app I don't wonder if they are trying all their best to get til the last possible cent and that includes selling some of your data.
I think on android is a very common practice: all your free google apps and your almost mandatory services do that but norton choses not to warn you in those cases.
End of the story, your post is throwing shit on a very nice piece of software that really doesn't deserve it.

You are very correct that Norton is a hog and will slow older systems down. I started working with computers back in 78 (PDP 8, TRS 80) When MS DOS 2 came along Norton started with back up programs and then went onto antivirus software. In all my years of using Norton I have never had a virus. They might have false positives, I would rather have a false positive than a virus crash. I will double check the down load site just to be sure. I know there are many sites to stay away from. Do any of you remember the I Love You virus. Look it up. Norton saved me on that one and many others.

I'm using an android tablet. I tried to open notepad ++ app from the google app store. Same results. I'm going to go back to the notepad plus plus site to see if I can get different results. Thank you for the heads up on the actual web site

I am a long time user of computer but I am not a computer master at all. One of the learning programs I dabled with is codecademey yet when I tried to down load the app it was full of problem, this is leading me to suspect that some of the apps from the google store are not what thw

I hit post by accident. Could other users check notepad++ on the google store to see if they get the same results? As I stated before I very much liked notepad++ in the past. The whole use of tablets and android apps are new to me. I have used linix in the past, as well as had a very expensive Lisa and a wonderful Mac, after that I dropped out of apple products. looking at the wed site https://notepad-plus-plus.org I am questioning if the app at the google store is the same thing. If I am looking at the developers name correctly it "control assistance", I also tried typing in notepad plus plus, notepad-plus-plus, notepad-+-+ and brought up different apps every time. Also I never open the app because of the warning from Norton. I am not even sure what data mining is. Norton warns of the use of explorer as a browser, l use windows because I am tired of learning new operating systems. I was quite satisfied with dos 5.0. Please advise and remember my problem is with the android app.

I agree with you that I am very wrong on my post about notepad++. Please everyone be aware that the app seems to be different than the windows based notepad++. Again I apologize to notepad++ about my post. I'm traveling overseas and only have tablet with me. Since coming across Solo learn I have been interested in relearning some of my antiquated programing skills. In the late 70s I spent 4 years programing 6502, 8080,8085, Z80. In the 90 pic and Parallax stamp as a hobey all in assembly. That is why my interest in cadecademy. Again a nice resource for updating skills. Also again a possible problem with the app. Does anyone know of a text editor app for android or a resource that evaluates apps for programmers. As an older person I have several ideas for apps specifically for people of my age bracket and would like to learn how to develope apps for android. Thank you for all the help I have received on this issue.
