Simply saying, it is a process of digging through large datasets and looking for patterns and relations between the data. For better results the datasets should be organized, coherent and contain not too many missing values.

The process can be done either by hand or reinforced automatically. Nowadays, with large or very large datasets around, it is mostly part of a data science concept.

First you go through your data to get a big picture and then you apply data science methods, like machine learning, to learn some new insights and observe new patterns inside your datasets. That helps you to better categorize your data and allows making predictions of future values or features.
