I learned a lot by starting with Ruby. It isn't on this site unfortunately, but it was written to be user-oriented rather than machine-focused. The *Head First* series of books is a good resource that gets you on keyboard and learning the basics right away.

Ruby is good but Python is also very handy and easy for complete begginers .
