How do I use graphics in c++?

I realise this is going to take more than you can probabky put on here, but I need an idiot guide from the basics. A lot of the stuff I have found has been very difficult to understand as they got very technical very quickly.

3D or 2D? Describe a little more, is it for a game, GUI, etc

@aklex. I don't know what a GUI is!! I thought it would be a basic procedure to put a pic on the screen!! I am only a newbie!

Have you tried following this YouTube series? I am stuck in Lesson 2. I have exactly the same code as the guy in the video and it compiles OK, but when I run it, I get an error on the SDL text.
