imo, python is largely in demand and has many pros currently. ^_^ i imagine that it'd be the same a couple years from now, beginners are largely advised to learn it anyway. php is just very popular, but i imagine any backend will replace it as its getting a bit old. i'm more of a web person right now going to start ruby in a while and then python really. :D
edit: i also agree with @James' take on this. it should also depend on what you're planning to do.

It all depends what you are trying trying to make. Dune buggies are awesome, as are f1 cars. They both are great at what they are designed to do. One is not better than the other. The same applies (for the most part) to programming languages.
