Increase XP: Complete lessons, do challenges, earn badges, get Best Answer Mark and upvotes in Q&A, daily login streak bonus, etc.

As for XP decrease, you can lose really badly at challenges, or just reset all your course progress to lose all language XP. Either that, or you do stuff against the rules and get X deducted.
