I think "better" depends on "context". languages, frameworks, libraries are just tools to solve your problem. depending on the problem, one should choose the right tool for right job. choice can be differ on skills, experiences and culture.

Main difference to my knowledge is this: 1) Java can function as a standalone code. 2) Java can also be used in tandem with other languages like SQL 3) JavaScript is for webpages to add interaction for the content on the page, games, weather widgets, etc. 4) JavaScript is MUCH more widely used (around 70% or so of programmers use it or have used it at some point) 5) Java usages is around 30% or so side note:(the percentages are from this app I believe, its hard to remember, I read so many textbooks.) to sum it up, each has its merits, Java and JavaScript can be used on just about any platform and develeopers experienced in their feilds make between $30-work annually (depending on job and skill set) I personally prefer Java but I'm biased, and I started programming from minecraft.

In short: Java is better. It's a global purpose language. JavaScript is not.
