The answer is in the article itself.
Most new developments in Python nowadays are used in data science. Since more and more companies have big amounts of data ready at their disposal, they rush to do something with it.
And since R is perceived (unfairly!) as a closed, specific language, while Python devs out there are more in numbers - you got the hype :)

Because python is very easy to use that is the first advantage.
Secondly with its easier approach python support many of the modern day concepts such as AI, ML, NLP and so on.
Python is also based on OOP concepts so it is also easy for low level programmers or the programmers who already have some basic knowledge about programming languages like C++, JAVA
These are some reasons behind the success of Python.
And by my side i love python very much....
