Please, can someone help? Re: <hr> use in HTML5 and parts of it being deprecated.

So, I basically want to have, at the top of my main page, just beneath the title to separate it from the rest of the page a dramatic, nicer looking line (<hr>, but not a boring, solid-black, 1px piece of thread!) that's more like 5-8px thick spanning the page edge to egde, maybe some shadowing & a color other than black, gray, brown, etc. So, CAN I still use <hr> with all the "trimmings" in HTML5, or is there any other way to make this happen? I am starting to learn CSS/CSS3. Maybe in there? Please help me!
