Difference between static and non static

Question

I am enrolled in AP Java on Codehs and it's been a fantastic experience and I understand everything I have learnt very well. But one thing that keeps driving my head nuts is the reason for using so everything static with static methods. I guess what I'm asking for is an example of these things being used in comparison to public variables and methods within a class, out side of the main run method.
