It's not required but It's good to have the knowledge, it may even help you program. With that said you don't need to spend thousands of dollars or multiple years to learn this information, some YouTube videos explain most of the vital information in 30 minutes. some areas to focus on are network security, how computer parts interact with each other, binary, and low and high level programming languages.
