Question About Challenges

I cannot understand this - when the challenges appear they seem to always be worth up to maybe 4xp...or it's someone twice my level and worth 35xp 😒 THE QUESTION IS: I just accepted a challenge that said it was worth 1xp, I lost 4:5 and somehow lost 27xp HOW?!

Win = (XP Shown) + (Correct Answers) Loss = 32 - (XP Shown) - (Correct Answers)

I've just received a Python challenge - I joined 2 days ago and have no idea what I'm doing. Is there anywhere to find any guides for this site? I got my first glimpse of Python this weekend - should I just decline?

I'm sorry, I still don't understand. EVERY loss starts with a +32 xp and then deducts XP based on what the match was worth and how many answers were wrong? Because again, it claimed to be worth 1xp and I got 1 question wrong. How am I sometimes losing the same low-level matches by a lot more but still GAINING a couple points? I have zero idea how they are calculating any of this.
