What do you think: single or broad focus learning?

I have background in c++ , but that is all. Have been focusing on java to more fully understand it before moving on to other languages. Is there more benefit in cross learning? (Learning more languages at once or another language before "mastering" the first?)

I think you can't ever really "master" a language. Even after some 10 years of javascript I still constantly find out new stuff about it... There's no reason not to pick up another language if you feel like exploring. Learning more can never be a bad thing. Every language also has a different perspective on how to do things the right way, and so you can take ideas from one language to sometimes solve problems in another language in really elegant ways you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

It may depend on your learning capabilities. But I'd say you should focus on one language first before going to the next one instead of learning it both at once. You may end up confusing yourself even more. Though there are concept similarities in languages, there are still differences that might affect your grasp of the language. You don't want to be a jack of all trades, but master of none.

Thank you for your answers. I have the feeling like I'm not progressing as quickly as i should, and wondered if what i don't know about other languages waz hindering me. I'll keep playing with Java for a while.
