How many lives are given at the start? How to earn lives for playing shortcuts if you ran out of them?

I think it's XP only. so if you take a shortcut, I think it takes away some of your XPs (honestly, I haven't tried. But in the end, if you want to learn; you should go through all the exercises anyways. On the other hand, if you already know the language; it should be easy. even without taking the shortcut ;)

I get to believe if we earn so many xps or win many challenges, there we get some lives or by completing course's modules we get some lives as there are questions in the modules too!
