Java is a programming language and a virtual machine, that allows you to write and compile one program and run it in any platform (windows, Linux, UNIX, iOS) that support the Java VM.

Actually there are another similar languages like Microsoft .NET Core and Mono that are multi-platforms.

Which one is better? Well, if you know C++ or Java or C# or all of those, then you can work with any would you like. The only difference with C++ is that you have to compile the code in the hardware you will use to run your program.
