How much JavaScript will I actually have to know as a web DESIGNER?

I posted a similar question to this but I didn't realize that front end devs and web designers are not exactly the same thing. I want to become a web DESIGNER -- how much JS do I need to know, exactly, to get hired for a position? I'm pretty much asking at what point I can stop learning before I start running into web DEVELOPER territory. I do want to become a developer one day, but I need a job asap that will pay the bills for now (I'm about to finish my portfolio after studying for 3 months).

Enough to be able to create a good website.

JS is the one and only programming language you will use for front-end web (HTML/CSS are not programming languages). The more of it you learn, you will be a better developer.
I don't think you need to know how to write and implement every script, but you certainly need to be aware of what js and jquery are capable of when you plan out your designs.

the best way to know if you are ready for a position is to start applying. if you have a good portfolio and show passion, you may just get the job or at least some advice on what you are still missing!
