Is it better learning a little of various programming languages or be a pro in just one?

To answer this properly, I'd first suggest that you consider what you may be doing in the short/long term as far as your goals are concerned. For example, if you plan to do something that requires you to specialize in Java, then I'd focus solely upon Java until that situation changes. Ultimately, the answer to this question depends upon what you want to do, what you plan to do, and what that entails.

For myself, I'm way too curious to settle with just one thing, so I like to stick my hands into anything that I can. Even in my professional setting, I find myself learning new technologies and using various existing technologies all of the time, so for myself, the more tools on my belt the better.

In the beginning, I'd say it's probably best to focus on one while you're learning the general concepts of programming. That'll make it a lot easier for you to understand initially and you won't get stuck confusing syntax between languages. In the long run, more than likely you're going to learn a lot of stuff, so be flexible and open for whatever comes your way!

Also, don't forget that you can engage into personal interest any time you want. I know a lot of languages that I don't even use but I learned them out of shear curiosity
