On XP points in challenges

Question

I see that if i lose a challenge i lose a lot of xp points, but if i win only get a few of xp point, no matter if my level is more or less than my challenge felow; how does this works ?

At your service! When I am confused what I usually do is go on the challenger's profile and check its points in the challenge weapon... That helps me know how much risk I am taking
