The answer is which ever you prefer.
Laptops have the advantage of being compact so are more convenient if you code on the move a lot. But a desktop will often cost you less (or be more powerful for the same money). But perhaps the biggest advantage of a desktop is upgradability.
On most laptops you'll likely only be able to upgrade memory & storage with a desktop having every component upgradable (even newer CPUs on older motherboards on AMD). & if a non-replaceable part breaks on a laptop then the whole system will need replacing if it can't be fixed. On a desktop however, if anything breaks you can pull it out & replace just that one part.
As you can see, these are all desktop vs laptop points not specifically unique to programming so people could probably list a whole lot more. But the answer is pretty much my 1st line. So go with what you prefer or is most convenient to you, just get one with descent specs.

go to laptop with at least this stats:
CPU quad-core 2.5 GHz (for multiprocessing tests)
RAM 8GB (when you're using virtual box, unity, etc....)
GPU 2GB (isn't very important but if you want to do some tests with openGL, Tensorflow, rendering, NLP, having a GPU will save you a lot of time)
screen 2k >= 15.6"
at least 3 USB (which at least one type-C or just 3.0)
SSD 250GB or HDD 500GB (better SSD)

I got a Dell Latitude 5580 series laptop a year ago and I use it for everyday office work. I like the slim and light feature most where I never feel like carry a brick to work everyday. The laptop feel solid which I think it's designed to pass the military grade test. With a FHD display and 256GB SSD, I am very happy with the quick response and brilliant display. Our company bought 5 units from amazon (link for your reference) https://amzn.to/2wd0OuP after scrap few 7 years old lenovo E450.
hope it helps.
