I will just say this: ** means power. 2 ** 2 = 4, 6 ** 2 = 36... So what to power 2 will give you 16?

We have (1 + _) ** 2 = 16. This means that when we raise what is inside the parenthesis to power 2 we must get 16. Now we know that the only number that gives us 16 when raised to power 2 is 4.
That means that what is inside the parenthesis must be 4. So: 1 + _ = 4. So the blank must be 3.

1 + 3 to give you the 4 that is then raised to power 2

When I asked what raised to power 2 gives 16 you said 4. I don't understand where 2**3 gives 16 comes from
