Better is such a relative term. Is a hammer better than a chainsaw? It is if you're trying to hammer nails, but maybe not so much if you're trying to cut down a tree.
It comes down to what your task is that you're trying to accomplish. Go with the tool that's best suited toward your goal.
Many people prefer to learn one thing and focus on it solely, but I'm a jack of many trades. I find it much more useful to have various tools on my belt so that I can select the appropriate one when tasked with certain situations. Learning multiple things hasn't ever impacted my ability to use the others. So it's not like an RPG game where I only get a certain amount of skill points; you get whatever you put the effort into.

Python is open source, while Matlab is a proprietary software, which might be an issue in certain cases.
Being an open source, Python has an unmatched advantage of having a great community of idependent contributors, a common effort of whom makes it able to develop numerous libraries at a great speed.
Still, Matlab has a sound legacy, so it's perhaps a matter of preference.
