How to make a navigation bar?

I already made my navigation bar, but what I need to know is how to make it bigger? I have written quite a bit of CSS for it and it looks nice, but how do I make it bigger and stand out? This is sort of what it looks like on my actual web page... except on my actual web page that extra grey line is cut out by the image......
