JavaScript is specifically designed for making web pages while python is a general purpose language. So JavaScript hands down both for front end and back end (node.js). You could use python for web pages but js is just easier for web.

JavaScript is the front end, interacts with html components (DOM) in the browser; Python is in the server and interacts with the system and database. Which one takes the largest part really depends on the design strategy , and whether the logic is processed on the server or on the client browser.

as a 'can you do it with js' sort of person, i would say js is the best option for websites by far, as it is made specifically for websites and being combined with HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, JQuery, etc. it is very flexible as it can be used in association with other languages easily.
