Should I have good knowledge of python to use Blender?

I've started to learn blender and noticed some context menus mentioned python. Is it absolutely necessary that I should know python beforehand or it's just optional?

If you plan to use Blender for more than just 3D designing (so basically games), Python is used as a scripting language to add functionality to objects in Blender.
